If you recall, Michelle not only did a tour of duty around Ghana on behalf of Raleigh International, but then jetted off once more to lead a few projects in Costa Rica (I reckon she's just sampling types of coffee and she's really working in a gift shop in Blackpool ;-)

Damian has forwarded these recent emails from base camp zero...

Subject: Africa Expedition Update #1

My address: Raleigh International, PO Box OS 2853, Osu - Accra, Ghana, West Africa.

Dear all (this was Michelles first email that was sent to a number of people - Ed). Please excuse the round-robin email, but the email here is mega-slow and crashes all the time. If i can just get this one update off successfully, then it saves me from repeatedly banging my head against the wall.

I hope, dear friends and family, you are all well. I've been a dimwit and left my address book at home. Do email me your postal addresses so as I can send y'all cards.

Below is an update I've written for the parents of all the young people on this expedition. It gives you an idea of what we're up to here. It's very long, so i would advise printing it out. (click here to read the 'parents update' - its also very insightful in what Michelle is actually doing! -Ed)

Stay safe and happy - Michelle xxx

Subject: Field Base calling

Hi Damian! Hotmail seeems to be playing up a bit in Africa - it's taking 40 minutes to log on and then 10 minutes to read them, and then sometimes when I try to reply ... the whole system crashes ... aargh! So I'm using the email address at Field Base. This is okay to do - and yes, you can reply to here, but the only thing I would say is that everyone reads all incoming emails, and it means I will be being discreet with what I am sending out as it is on the record! But it's the quickest way to reach me, as I don't get to internet cafes very often and when i do, I want to put my fist through the screen!!

This last week, I have been round all of Ghana in the 'loop' vehicle with Rupert, the expedition leader. We visitied seven of the nine project sites. It's been great to see the young people stuck into their work: from building foundations of a nursery school with World Vision, buildng latrines with Action Aid, building ranger's accommodation with the Wildlife Division in national parks, and surveying the egg laying habits of turtles on the beach ... cool! The young people are great - I find them a tremendous inspiration, and it kind of makes me wonder why on earth I wasn't sorted enough to do something like this when I was under 25!

I'll be here at Field Base until this Wednesday. Then I will be out between Wed 7 Nov until Fri 16 Nov. I'm going canoeing with one of the trekking/adventure groups, and am going to learn to abseil ... I thought it was time I challenged myself by trying to conquer my vertigo ... if you don't hear from me after the 16th, then you know I'm still stuck up the top of a cliff, trembling and quaking!

Subject: Back From Lake Volta

Wow! I can't believe this is going through! Amazing news! Don't send me photos as it will probably crash the whole of Ghana's system! I'll wait with eager anticipation to see the pix and/or the real thing when I get back to the Yookay.

I got back last night from a week of living with the group 'Alpha 8' on Lake Volta. It was an incredible week. Firstly because it really makes you feel part of the Raleigh experience, as you are camping, cooking, eating, talking, sleeping with the Venturers all the time. These young people are so inspiring ... they seem so sorted and focused at such a young age.

The Lake itself was amazing. Biggest man made lake in the world, and so you are canoeing amongst all these dead trees from when it was flooded! We all were trained up to 'one-star' level with the British Canoe Union, and have all passed our tests, and now are eligible to have certificates! I missed your steady hand at the tiller to start with, Damian, but by the end of the week - I knew I'd be able to steer you up the Zambezi again with confidence! (I thought it was speed that was the problem! - Ed)

Abseiling was terrifying, mainly becasue i suffer from vertigo and go dizzy with heights. But that is exactly why I volunteered to be with this group - as I wanted to make it my personal 'Raleigh Challenge'. I cried and screamed all the way down - but I did it !!

Juts got back last night and have now met the chief exec of Raleigh. He is a fascinating person. The visit with the President of Ghana is off because there has been an emergency food situation with the farmers in the north of Ghana that the President has had to attend to. Never mind.

I'm off again today for three days to a town called Aburi to do an assessment weekend with 100 young Ghanaians who want to come on expedition next year. We will be setting them lots of tests over the weekend and physical challenges. if they pass, then they will join the first of three expeditions next Spring.

Can't beleive the end of phase two is looming. I'll be putting together another magazine for the Venturers called The Ghana Gossip. Then I'll be working on a full colour end of expedition magazine for them - "The Rupert" - and I will be going out in phase three to see all the completed buildings, and I will organise opening ceremonies with the village chiefs and will get the press to come along. After that, I'll be orgainsing an end of expedition slide show for the Venturers. It certainly is a lot of work, but a lot of fun :-)

I have also found out I will definitley be going to Costa Rica & Nicaragua with Raleigh as a Project Manager. I'm really thrilled. I'll be leaving on 21 January and back again in April. Not quite sure about finances, but as I haven't been overdrawn for six years, then I think it's time to be so!

Subject: Hola Muchachos y Muchachas!

Hi everyone! Just to let you know all is well, and that I just left the rainforest this morning after three wonderful incredible months there ...

it was the BEST! Expedition finishes on the 27 April and then I am off to other parts of Costa Rica and possibly Nicaragua. Back to the UK on the 22 May ...

Will try to send postcards in the interim period. Hope you are all happy and healthy. I can't recommend this job highly enough ... it has just been the most rewarding, interesting, challenging and fun experience I think I have ever had :-)

Okay - gotta go and catch a bus back to Field Base ... will try to email at some stage soon.
